01 discovery & research
Blanked Studios is a brand I’ve followed for a while and I think they create beautiful interior decor. In one Instagram Reel from Brandon (the founder) he showed off his sketchbook where I noticed he had multiple chair sketches. This made me think about what a Blanked Studios chair would look like. Therefore, I decided to take on the challenge of applying their brutalist aesthetic to a chair.

The first steps in the process was looking at materials. At the time of designing, all Blanked products used either wood, metal, or concrete, or a combination of the three. Therefore, I decided to limit myself to this material selection to fit into the Blanked product range.
My main inspiration came from the brand's existing product catelog. I looked for repeat shapes and themes. That’s when I noticed the Blanked book holder. I really liked the overall shape and I saw the potential for a chair immediately. The next step was experimenting with different ways of utilizing the shape in a chair.

After rounds of iterations, I found a shape that hit all the targets I had set out. My primary material choice was stainless steel, but because of that I had to add a pillow. I wanted the chair to have a certain level of comfort.
Adding a pillow means I had to go outside my original material restrictions, but I found it necessary to make the product better. I decided to make the pillow in leather as that felt most in line with the aesthetic.

The chair was modeled, textured, and rendered in Blender. For the visuals I created a brutalist environment with concrete walls using BlenderKit add-on.
