01 Discovery & Research

01 Discovery & Research

The basis for this project was solving my own problem. After setting up my new desk I was looking for some warm lighting. The problem is not that it doesn’t exist. Desk lamps with warm lighting exists. But I wanted the lamp itself to feel warm. Meaning even if you turned if off, it still felt warm. Many desk lamps are made in some type of metal, which inherntly feels cold. Therefore, I wanted to experiment with different materials. Wood would be the most obvious choice as a warm material, but it didn’t give me the aesthetic I wanted. Therefore I got an unorthodox idea; to use fabrics on a lamp. And what is the most cozy fabric? In my opinion, fleece.

02 concept exploration

02 concept exploration

After having the basic idea for the the project, I could go deeper into exploring the overarching concept and themes. A theme so far has been warmth, and I wanted to continue that. What gives us warmth? The sun, light, fire, plaid, other humans, etc. The lamp is already supposed to have a warm light, so I found the most interesting to be humans. Having the right people around you can give such a warm feeling. And even better is a good hug from someone you love. So that’s what I wanted to try and incorporate into the design.

I started by experimenting with shapes that could give me the feeling I was looking for. Communicating a hug and warmth through shapes is not too hard, but to then have it work on a desk lamp was quite a hard task.

After lots of iterations I ended up with a version where the outer fleece layer hugged the lamp itself, wrapping around the light globe with four arms.

The 3D work was done entirely in Blender. To create renderings in a scene I used a add-on called BlenderKit, which allows you to easily import 3D models of interiors, etc. This allowed me to build out a scene for the lamp without having to model everything.

My most important target with the graphics and visuals was to communicate the feeling of warmth.

Sadly, I had to compromise a bit on the fleece texture as this was rendered on my old computer that could not handle anything better than the end result.
